Protecting the Rights of Burn Victims
A burn injury is one of the most painful injuries that anyone can endure. It is also one of the most preventable. Every year, hundreds of California residents suffer agonizing injuries and disfigurement in catastrophic burn accidents caused by someone else's negligence. That negligence can range from nonfunctioning smoke alarms, to unsafe electrical work, to defective products. The Reinecke Law Firm has successfully handled industrial and residential burn injuries caused by fires, explosions, electrical shocks and chemical exposure.
There are many types of burn injuries. Some of the most common are:
- Heat burns: caused by contact with fire, hot liquids, hot surfaces or explosions
- Fuel-fed fires: caused by car, truck and motorcycle accidents
- Electrical burns: caused by contact with electricity
- Chemical burns: caused by corrosive chemicals that "burn" the skin without heat
First degree burns are the least serious and usually require minimal medical care. These burns damage only the first layer of skin and cause redness with small blisters. Second degree burns damage both the first layer of skin, or epidermis, and the second layer, or dermis. These burns are painful and sometimes require hospitalization if the burn is widespread.
The most serious burns are third-degree burns, which damage all three layers of the skin. A third-degree burn may also damage tissue under the skin, including muscle, nerves and bone. Third-degree burns usually result in the need for painful skin grafts, extensive therapy and reconstructive surgery.
